Recent heavy rains have caused flash floods and landslides in the Himalayan region, particularly impacting the Kishtwar district of Kashmir and northern Pakistan.

Kashmir, India

In Kashmir, the remote village of Chositi has been severely affected. Situated along a popular pilgrimage route to a Hindu shrine, Chositi was hit by a cloudburst, leading to flash floods and landslides. The disaster has resulted in at least 37 confirmed deaths, with up to 50 people still missing.

Rescue operations have been underway, with local villagers and officials initially responding, followed by reinforcements from police, disaster management officials, and India's military and paramilitary forces. Over 150 people have been rescued, with many injured individuals receiving medical treatment.

Northern Pakistan and Kashmir

Northern Pakistan and parts of Kashmir have also been hit hard by the floods. The situation is terrible, according to spokesperson Bilal Faizi. Over 300 people have been reported dead due to the floods and subsequent landslides across the affected areas.

Thousands of people have been evacuated, and dozens have been injured. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing to assist those affected by the floods.

Ongoing Challenges

The disaster areas in both regions are remote, complicating rescue efforts. The bad weather is also hampering rescue operations in Kashmir. Flash floods are common in the Himalayan region during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the region remains on high alert due to heavy rains. An orange alert has been issued for potential flood-like situations. Recent incidents include a bridge collapse in Kathua and landslides blocking roads, further complicating the situation.

Despite these challenges, rescue teams in northern Pakistan are working tirelessly to rescue possibly dozens, if not hundreds, of people. The death toll in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir due to floods and landslides has risen to at least 50.

In the village of Chositi, the flood swept away makeshift kitchen tents while pilgrims were having lunch, adding to the tragedy. The situation is dire, and rescue efforts continue in both Kashmir and northern Pakistan.
