Bochum Prepares to Host the Universiade
Sports Frenzy at Bochum: The World University Games Extravaganza
Get ready for the hottest sports event of the year in the Ruhr region! The FISU World University Games Rhein-Ruhr is set to take over Bochum, Essen, and Duisburg, with Bochum hosting some of the most thrilling competitions. Elisa Mevius, a gold-medalist in 3x3 basketball from last summer's Olympics in Paris, will lead the charge in her hometown.
Competitions in athletics, 3x3 basketball, and wheelchair 3x3 will kick off in the scenic Bochum. The opening act will take place at the Jahrhunderthalle, followed by performances at the newly built Lohrheidestadion in the second week.
Lake Kemnade: The Grand Finale
The World University Games will conclude with competitions at the picturesque Lake Kemnade. Athlete's footsteps will echo on its nine-kilometer shoreline as they race the women's and men's half marathon on July 26. Following that, the German university championship over 10 kilometers will take place, and on the last day of the games, the 20-kilometer walk will round off the event. Spectators can bask in the beautiful scenery while cheering on their favorite athletes.
Team Germany's Largest Ever
Elisa Mevius is one of 305 athletes on the nomination list for "Team Studi" – the largest German team to ever compete in the World University Games. Athletes from Bochum and Wattenscheid universities will have a home-game advantage, much like Jolina Ernst and Joyce Oguama from TV Wattenscheid 01. These Wattenscheid athletes are among the first to compete in the new Lohrheidestadion, with Joyce participating in the discus throw and Jolina in the 4x100-meter relay.
Premiere for the New Lohrheidestadion
The new Lohrheidestadion, purpose-built for the World University Games, will host the athletics competitions from July 21 to 27. After an over 50 million euro renovation, it will be the only stadium in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) capable of hosting German athletics championships. It's the first major event after the more than two-year reconstruction works and will feature numerous exciting competitions.
3x3 Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball at the jaarhunderthalle
The Jahrhunderthall, another Bochum venue, will host 3x3 basketball and wheelchair basketball competitions. Competitions here will run from July 16 to 20, coinciding with the Ruhr Games Festival that includes BMX competitions and concerts by Querbeat and Ski Aggu.
Blue and White Pride in Rowing and Water Polo
Bochum boasts a strong tradition in rowing and water polo, as no less than three players from SV-Blau-Weiß belong to the German team. Both the rowing and water polo competitions will take place in Duisburg. Finja Clausmeyer, Jana Stuwe, and Darja Heinbichner from the blue-white vice-champion team are some of the notable athletes to watch out for.
Ines Lenze from the Bochumer Hochschulsport will lead the "Team Studi" as the delegation leader. Here's a list of the athletes from Bochum and its neighboring universities competing in the various sports as part of Team Germany:
- Athletics: Joyce Oguama (Ruhr-Uni Bochum/TV 01), Jolina Ernst (TV 01), Samira Attermeyer (Ruhr-Uni Bochum)
