Boat sinks in Vancouver's English Bay with only mast still visible
A 30-foot boat sank in Vancouver’s English Bay on Wednesday afternoon, leaving only its mast visible above water. The incident is one of several involving unmoored or damaged vessels as heavy winds batter the region. Authorities have yet to identify the owner of the sunken vessel.
The sinking occurred on December 19, 2025, during worsening winter weather. Strong winds caused multiple boats in the area to break free from moorings, drag anchors, or wash ashore. The Canadian Coast Guard and local agencies responded to at least 10 troubled vessels across Kitsilano, False Creek, and English Bay.
Officials have warned all boat owners to inspect their moored vessels for ice and snow buildup. Under Canadian law, owners remain responsible for their vessels at all times, including covering cleanup, repairs, or any federal remediation costs. As of now, the owner of the sunken boat has not come forward.
The sunken vessel adds to the challenges faced by local authorities amid harsh winter conditions. Owners of unsecured or damaged boats may face financial liability for recovery and environmental impacts. The Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation as weather forecasts predict further disruptions.
