Boat crash on Cayuga Lake leaves victim in a stable state of health (updated)
News Article: Cayuga Lake Boat Crash Update
On August 1, 2025, a boat crash occurred on Cayuga Lake, approximately three miles south of Long Point State Park. The incident involved a 1987 Larson boat and a 2019 Tracker fishing boat.
According to the latest updates, two people were injured in the collision. The driver of the Tracker fishing boat, Anthony J. Rapoza, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. His passenger, Paul Davis, was transported by ambulance and has since been released. Fortunately, all four passengers on the Larson boat were unharmed.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that the Larson boat, operated by John H. Tiaskkun of Hawthorne, Florida, was traveling northeast and collided with the stationary Tracker boat, which had been troll fishing about 300 feet from shore. The Sheriff’s Office found that the Larson boat lacked proper visual distress signals and had expired ones. Tiaskkun was cited for reckless operation of a vessel, operating without a safety certification, and for the expired visual distress signals. No mechanical issues were found with the Tracker fishing boat.
The authorities determined Tiaskkun was at fault in the collision. The investigation remains open, and the Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with additional information about the incident to contact them at 315-253-1222.
