BNP Celebrates Khaleda Zia's Eightieth Birthday Celebration
Today, 15 August, marks the 80th birthday of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. The occasion is being celebrated with doa and milad mahfils at mosques and BNP offices nationwide, according to a press release issued on 13 August.
In Dhaka, a special doa and milad mahfil will be arranged on the ground floor of BNP's central office in Nayapaltan, attended by senior leaders. Affiliates of the party, including Bangladesh Kormojibi Dal and Jatiyotabadi Muktijoddha Dal, are holding separate discussion meetings at the National Press Club.
However, there are discrepancies regarding Khaleda Zia's date of birth. The Police Headquarters and Dhaka Metropolitan Police records show her birthday as 15 August 1946, while the health ministry report states 8 May 1946. The Special Branch of Police and documents from the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education cite 5 September 1946 as her birthday.
The High Court received reports from six government agencies in December 2021, which mention three different dates for Khaleda Zia's birthday. These inconsistencies have led to confusion about her exact birthdate.
Two main birth dates have been reported: 15 August 1945 and 15 August 1946. The 1946 date appears in more recent party communications and government-related media on anniversaries, while the 1945 date appears in other biographical summaries.
The 1945 date is reported in some sources, including Daily Tribunal24 and Kiddle, citing her birth in Dinajpur and family background consistent with government and historical accounts. The 1946 date is widely reported, notably by the BNP party itself and Bangladesh Pratidin, which states she was born on this date in Dinajpur as the fourth of six siblings.
Despite the ambiguity, the consensus remains on August 15 as her birthdate, but the exact year remains unclear in official and media reports.
