Hamburger Band Blumfeld Reunited After Nearly 20 Years - Blumfeld reunites after 20 years with new music and a vinyl anthology

Blumfeld, the influential Hamburg band, has reunited after nearly 20 years apart. Known for their role in the Hamburger Schule movement, they first formed in 1990 and gained fame with their 1992 debut album, Ich-Maschine. The group's return includes a new studio project and a major retrospective release.

The band was founded by singer-guitarist Jochen Distelmeyer, drummer André Rattay, and bassist Eike Bohlken. Their name comes from a Franz Kafka short story, reflecting their literary and introspective approach. Blumfeld stood out in the Hamburger Schule scene with a sound defined by cold yet emotional vocals, hypnotic shoegaze guitars, and damped bass—creating an atmospheric, melancholic style. This set them apart from peers like Die Sterne, whose music leaned toward catchy indie-pop, and Tocotronic, known for raw punk energy and direct lyrics.

To celebrate their reunion, Sony Music will release Blumfeld – Für Immer. The Anthology Archives Vol. II on May 22. The limited-edition vinyl box set includes all six of their albums, plus two previously unreleased live recordings. Meanwhile, the band is already working on their seventh studio album, with plans to drop the first singles later this year.

The reunion marks Blumfeld's first new music in decades, offering longtime fans a chance to revisit their back catalogue while anticipating fresh material. The upcoming box set and album signal a deliberate return to the spotlight, reinforcing their legacy in German alternative music.
