Blue Jays Pitcher Berrios Set to Outperform Ex-Teammate in matchup
New Article:
Ready for some baseball action? Here's a breakdown of tonight's showdown between the struggling yet promising Blue Jays and the injury-ridden Angels.
Many a one-win day hasn't exactly lit our fire, but we've managed to tread the strikeout ladder successfully. Players props seem to be my sweet spot this season, unlike those pesky sides and totals. I'm getting anxious, but I'll keep putting one foot in front of the other. Tonight, we've got the Blue Jays squaring off against the Angels.
Toronto, huh? Never rooted for 'em as a kid, never lived there, and I can't stand their stadium or logo. Heck, I didn't even play with 'em in video games. Yet, for some reason, I find myself rooting them on to be a decent team. Unfortunately, they haven't climbed over that hurdle in the past couple of years. They're currently 16-19 on the season and a dismal 5-11 away from Canada. The Blue Jays keep pumping money into the team, targeting big-name free agents every offseason, but they just can't manage to make the playoffs. I still think this is a solid roster, though. Tonight, they'll put Jose Berrios on the mound. Berrios has been a serviceable starter with a 1-1 record, 3.98 ERA, and a 1.38 WHIP. He's had one not-so-great outing this season, surrendering three home runs and six earned runs in five innings against the Orioles. But since then, he's kept opposing batters to 12 earned runs in 35.2 innings. The Angels hitters have a respectable .297 average against Berrios.
Now, I don't claim to have any ties to the Angels, but I find myself cheering them on, too. Maybe it's the underdog in me, wanting to see teams that have struggled finally turn it around. Perhaps it's about seeing legendary players, like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, finally experience postseason glory. Sadly, neither Trout nor Ohtani could deliver the goods. Now, Trout's out with an injury, and Ohtani's left the team. The Angels have invested in players, but they're not seeing the results they desire. They snatched up tonight's starter, Yusei Kikuchi, in the offseason in an effort to bolster their rotation. Kikuchi stands at 0-4 with a 4.21 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. He's been alright – he's got three quality starts and hasn't given up more than four earned runs in any game this season. Tonight, he'll face his former team, and they've hit .261 in 61 at-bats against him.
Between our two mound maestros, and the bullpens, this game should add up to plenty of runs. I've been in a bind with totals lately, but I do lean toward this one going over. Instead of a total, I'll focus on the side. In this one, I believe the better team, despite their wretched road record, is the Blue Jays. I may not rate Berrios significantly higher than Kikuchi, but I do rank him a smidgen higher. Now, take Toronto to steal this one.
