Bloodshed in a Sudanese mosque as paramilitary forces utilize drone technology, resulting in the fatalities of 43 individuals, according to medical reports.
In the heart of North Darfur, El-Fashir, Sudan, a tragic event unfolded on Friday. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Sudanese paramilitary group, is accused of killing 43 civilians who were praying inside a mosque.
The exact location of the mosque where this heinous crime occurred has not been disclosed. However, the Associated Press could not independently verify the footage of the mosque that was shared by the Resistance Committees in El-Fashir, a group comprising local citizens and human rights activists.
This attack comes amidst a series of attacks over the past week in El-Fashir, where the fight between the army and the RSF has been ongoing. The latest wave of fighting escalated into a civil war in April 2023, making El-Fashir the epicentre of the conflict for over a year.
Residents of El-Fashir reported hearing loud explosions and seeing drones being used during the fighting. The RSF is also reported to have been targeting civilians, including in displacement shelters. The Darfur Victims Support Organisation received reports of the RSF targeting several unarmed civilians, including women and older adults, in these shelters.
The Sudan Doctors Network described the attack as a "heinous crime" against unarmed civilians and a violation of humanitarian, religious, and international law. The organisation also reported that the killing occurred early on Friday and was reported by the local medical group.
The civil war in Darfur, of which El-Fashir is a part, has resulted in at least 40,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation. It has also displaced as many as 12 million people and pushed many to the brink of famine. The intense fighting that occurred in the western and southern parts of El-Fashir on Thursday is further exacerbating the already dire situation.
The Resistance Committee in El-Fashir stated that heavy RSF artillery was continuously targeting residential neighbourhoods. The committee posted a video on Friday showing parts of the mosque reduced to rubble with several bodies scattered on the site.
The fighting in El-Fashir is ongoing, adding to the long-standing civil war that has devastated the region. The international community is urged to intervene and bring an end to the senseless violence and protect the civilian population from further harm.
