Blonde Transfers Courtroom Drama to Theatre Calgary's Stage

Calgary audiences can witness the final production of Theatre Calgary's season, a musical adaptation of the beloved comedy-drama "Legally Blonde." Directed and choreographed by Stephanie Graham, the show celebrates the resilience of Elle Woods, a character famously portrayed by Reese Witherspoon in the 2001 film.

In the story, Elle, a seemingly superficial sorority girl, embarks on a transformative journey when her boyfriend abandons her for Harvard Law School. Determined to win back his love and prove her worth, Elle enrolls in the demanding institution, setting the stage for a series of comedic yet heartwarming challenges as she strives to break stereotypes and societal expectations.

The partnership between Theatre Calgary and Edmonton's Citadel Theatre brings "Legally Blonde" to the stage in Calgary, inviting audiences to share Elle's journey as she overturns people's preconceptions about her. According to Graham, the appeal of Elle Woods lies in her relatability; most of us have experienced underestimation at some point in our lives, and Elle's success comes without having to compromise her true self.

The musical boasts a score by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and a book by Heather Hach. Kelsey Verzotti takes on the role of Elle Wood, sharing the stage with canine co-stars Mojave (as Bruiser) and Fergus Finnegan Skellington (as Rufus). The show runs from Friday, June 9, through June 15, at the Max Bell Theatre at Arts Commons.

Tickets and further information can be found on the theater's website. This production delivers an uplifting story of personal growth, empowerment, and the importance of challenging societal norms, making it both entertaining and relevant.
