Bloc's Influence Wanes: A Dwindling of Power

In Montreal's northern and southern districts, the Liberal Party has snatched seats away from the Bloc Québécois, which performed poorly in these regions.

Bloc's Influence Wanes: A Dwindling of Power

In the northern regions of Montreal and the South Shore, the 2021 Canadian federal election saw the Liberals stealing victories from the Bloc Québécois, who had a challenging night in these areas.

In Laval, the Liberals maintained their stronghold without any surprises. Meanwhile, in Mirabel and Rivière-du-Nord, the Bloc managed to hold onto their seats. The battle for Terrebonne was tight, with the Liberals trailing by only 28 votes. But the real shocker was in Terrebonne-De Blainville and Rivière-des-Mille-Îles, where the Bloc lost their seats to the Liberal Linda Lapointe and Luc Desilets' successor, respectively.

Carlos Leitao, a provincial finance minister, seized the safe seat of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin following the retirement of the 83-year-old Yves Robillard. The Bloc faced a particularly tough night on the South Shore of Montreal. Incumbent Bloc MP Denis Trudel was defeated in Longueuil-Saint-Hubert, a riding that underwent electoral redistribution, and La Prairie-Atateken also switched from the Bloc to the Liberals. Bloc parliamentary leader Alain Therrien also suffered a defeat in Mont-Saint-Bruno-L'Acadie.

Newcomer Nathalie Provost, who was previously appointed by her leader Mark Carney during a speech in Nova Scotia, won convincingly in Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville. Injured in the École Polytechnique massacre, Ms. Provost advocates for better gun control and, in an interview with Radio-Canada, expressed her pride in representing the largely agricultural riding. She stated that she entered politics to defend her values rather than pursue a ministerial position.

To sum it up, the 2021 Canadian federal election saw the Liberals strengthening their hold on the Montreal area, while the Bloc Québécois found success in various parts of Quebec. In the South Shore area, both the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois competed fiercely for several ridings, with specific outcomes varying by riding. The Bloc generally performed well in Quebec, maintaining or gaining seats in regions with strong support.

  1. The long-serving incumbent Yves Robillard was replaced by Carlos Leitao, a former provincial finance minister, in the riding of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin.
  2. In the South Shore area of Montreal, the Bloc Québécois and the Liberals had a close competition, with La Prairie-Atateken and Longueuil-Saint-Hubert switching from the Bloc to the Liberals.
  3. Hubert, a potential political candidate, might find interest in the politics of the South Shore, following the intense competition between the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois in the region.
  4. During the news coverage, reporters discussed policy-and-legislation, war-and-conflicts, general-news, and the political outcomes of the 2021 Canadian federal election, including the Liberals' success in the Montreal area and the Bloc Québécois' performance in Quebec.
  5. Newcomer Nathalie Provost, who is an advocate for gun control, represented the Liberals in the agriculturally rich Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville riding, after being appointed by Mark Carney and winning convincingly in the 2021 Canadian federal election.
In the northern crown and the South Shore regions, the Liberals successfully captured seats previously held by the Quebec Bloc, indicating a challenging electoral night for the Bloc.
Bloc Québécois suffered losses in northern Montreal and south shore regions, with seats being claimed by Liberal candidates instead.
