Blockbuster Movies Report Big Earnings over Memorial Day Weekend: Mission: Impossible, Lilo & Stitch Lead the Pack

Hitting Box Office Records this Memorial Day Weekend!

🎥 Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch are ruling the roost in movie theaters durante este fin de semana de Memoria, according to Variety. With a staggering worldwide total of $341.7 million, Lilo has blasted past initial predictions, and its current domestic take of $145.5 million has smashed the previous record set by Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 (which garnered $160 million across all four days) as the best opening weekend for this holiday. Closing in on Black Panther's record of $242 million during Presidents Day 2018, Lilo currently ranks as the second-best holiday weekend launch. It's also one of the biggest debuts for Disney's live-action remakes, just behind 2019's The Lion King and 2017's Beauty & the Beast, which respectively grossed $191 million and $174 million. By the end of the four-day weekend, analysts predict Lilo will earn $183 million.

On the other hand, Final Reckoning opened to $190 million worldwide. It opened a week early in territories like Australia and South Korea, accounting for $127 million of its global haul. By the end of the weekend, its domestic earnings might rise from the current $63 million to a new record of $77 million for the Mission: Impossible series. Both films have garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences, thanks in part to the excitement building up to their releases. With Lilo based on a classic 23-year-old Disney animated film and Reckoning potentially being the last film in the series or the final one starring Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt, nostalgia drives both movies.

As the theaters are filled with audiences eager to catch movies, other holdovers like Final Destination Bloodlines, Sinners, and Thunderbolts are also grabbing attention. It's been over a decade since people went to the theaters this much during Memorial Day, according to Variety, marking a significant improvement from 2024's weaker showings of Furiosa and Garfield.
