Blockbuster Movies Generate Impressive Memorial Day Box Office Revenue with Mission: Impossible and Lilo & Stitch

Holiday movie-goers are flocking to theaters this Memorial Day weekend, with two blockbusters, "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" and "Lilo & Stitch," leading the charge.

According to Variety, these films have made history by generating the "largest Memorial Day holiday in history," raking in a staggering $341.7 million worldwide. "Lilo & Stitch" has surpassed initial projections, its current domestic take of $145.5 million dethroning "Top Gun: Maverick's" $160 million four-day haul in 2022 and setting a new benchmark for Memorial Day openings. Domestically, it ranks second only to "Black Panther's" $242 million Presidents Day 2018 earnings. By the end of the four-day weekend, it's expected to reach $183 million.

"Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" grossed $190 million worldwide, with its international audience accounting for $127 million of that total. Its domestic take of $63 million might rise to $77 million by the weekend's end, setting a new record for the "Mission: Impossible" series. Both movies have received positive critical and audience reception, boosted by growing anticipation ahead of their releases. The appeal lies in nostalgia - "Lilo & Stitch" is based on a 23-year-old Disney classic, while "The Final Reckoning" could mark the end of the series or just the end for Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt.

Apart from these heavyweights, other films like "Final Destination Bloodlines," "Sinners," and "Thunderbolts" are also holding their ground. Variety reports that it's been over a decade since movie-goers frequented theaters this much during Memorial Day, with a noticeable improvement over 2024's lackluster "Furiosa" and "Garfield" showings. The summer season continues with anticipated releases like "Ballerina," "How to Train Your Dragon," and "28 Years Later" in June, followed by "Superman" and "Fantastic Four" in July.
