Blockbuster Movies Bring in High Revenue over Memorial Day Weekend: "Mission: Impossible" and "Lilo & Stitch" Lead the Pack
Ready for a blockbuster weekend? Two massive movies are ruling the box office this Memorial Day: "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" and the beloved Disney classic, "Lilo & Stitch".
As per Variety, these two films have broken records and given us the "largest Memorial Day holiday in history" with a whopping $341.7 million worldwide combined earnings[1]. Lilo & Stitch has far exceeded initial predictions and its current domestic take of $145.5 million has dethroned Top Gun: Maverick's Memorial Day weekend earnings from 2022 ($160 million) and is second only to Black Panther’s Presidents Day 2018 earnings of $242 million in domestic box office records[1][2].
When it comes to global earnings, Lilo & Stitch has taken the lead, being one of the biggest debuts for Disney's live-action remakes, just behind 2019's The Lion King and 2017's Beauty & the Beast, with respective earnings of $191 million and $174 million[1].
On the other hand, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning opened to $190 million worldwide, with its international audience accounting for $127 million of that sum[1]. By the end of the four-day weekend, its domestic earnings may reach up to $77 million, setting a new record for the Mission: Impossible series[1].
Both films have been positively received by both critics and audiences, fueled by their growing anticipation before release. Nostalgia plays a significant role in the success of both movies – Lilo & Stitch is based on a 23-year-old classic, and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning might be the last film in the series, or Cruise's last appearance as Ethan Hunt[1].
Moviegoers aren't stopping just there – holdovers like Final Destination Bloodlines, Sinners, and Thunderbolts are still grabbing attention, marking an impressive increase in theater attendance over the past decade[1]. Memorial Day's stronger showing in 2025 contrasts sharply with 2024's weaker performance of Furiosa and Garfield[1][4].
With the summer season just around the corner, we have exciting releases like Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, and 28 Years Later lined up for June, followed by Superman and Fantastic Four in July[5].
