Blockbuster Hits "Mission: Impossible" and "Lilo & Stitch" Dominate Memorial Day Box Office Earnings
Hey there, listen up! This weekend's gotta be a blockbuster, with two badass movies stealing the show – "Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning" and "Lilo & Stitch". And let me tell ya, these flicks are tearing up the box office.
According to Variety, the two films have smashed records Hollywood hasn't seen in over a decade, claiming the "largest Memorial Day holiday in history". With a whopping $341.7 million worldwide, "Lilo" is trucking past initial forecasts, and its domestic revenue of $145.5 million has knocked "Top Gun: Maverick" (which made $160 million in 2022) out of the top spot for Memorial Day's best opening weekend. It's blown away second place by a country mile, only falling short of "Black Panther's" $242 million during Presidents Day 2018. By the end of the four-day weekend, "Lilo" is projected to snag a cool $183 million.
On the other hand, "Final Reckoning" raked in $190 million worldwide when you count its international audience of $127 million, who caught the flick early in Australia, South Korea, and other territories. While its domestic haul of $63 million may not seem like much, it's poised to climb up to $77 million by weekend's end, setting a new record for the Mission: Impossible series.
Both movies have been slam-dunking with the critics and the audience, thanks to the hype surrounding their releases. Nostalgia is the secret sauce – "Lilo" is based on a 23-year-old Disney classic, and "Final Reckoning" might be the final mission or Ethan Hunt's last two-step.
The folks at Variety also said that Memorial Day traffic at theaters this year is neck and neck with 2005's. Don't forget the other hit movies of the weekend, like "Final Destination Bloodlines", "Sinners", and "Thunderbolts".
If you've caught either "Mission: Impossible" or "Lilo & Stitch", let's hear your thoughts in the comments below.
