Blockbuster Films Rake in Significant Revenue Over Memorial Day Weekend: Mission: Impossible and Lilo & Stitch Lead the Charge

Put on your popcorn pants, folks! This Memorial Day weekend, we've got two blockbusters to quench your cinematic thirst - Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch, and they're leaving audiences spellbound in theaters.

According to Variety, this duo has marked the "largest Memorial Day holiday in history" with a grand total of $341.7 million worldwide. Lilo has surpassed initial expectations, raking in $145.5 million domestically and shattering Top Gun: Maverick's (2022) $160 million four-day Memorial Day earnings. It ranks as the second-best holiday weekend opening behind Black Panther's $242 million during Presidents Day 2018. By the weekend's end, Lilo is projected to earn $183 million, solidifying its place as one of Disney's most successful live-action adaptations.

On the other hand, Final Reckoning debuted with $190 million worldwide, thanks to its international audience. By day's end, its $63 million domestic take might reach up to $77 million, which will mark a new record for the Mission: Impossible series. Both films have received robust critical and audience acclaim, buoyed by growing excitement leading up to their releases. Nostalgia reigns supreme for both movies - the former harking back to a 23-year-old Disney classic, and the latter potentially marking the farewell for Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt.

While the spotlight's on these two, other movies like Final Destination: Bloodlines, Sinners, and Thunderbolts continue to hold their ground. This Memorial Day weekend, it's been over a decade since we've seen such an onslaught of movie buffs in theaters, a far cry from the weak showing in 2024 with Furiosa and Garfield.

The summer season delivers more cinematic treasures, including Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, and 28 Years Later in June, followed by Superman and Fantastic Four in July.
