Minecraft Breaking Records with $157M Opening Weekend

The unprecedented success of Warner Bros.' "A Minecraft Movie"

The long-awaited adaptation of the iconic video game "Minecraft" smashed box office predictions, raking in a staggering $157 million domestically in its opening weekend. This massive gross made it the biggest opener of the year, leaving analysts stunned.

Originally, industry experts suspected "A Minecraft Movie" would only gross around $60 million before revising their estimate to about $100 million. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, produced this blockbuster hit.

Fueled by strong pre-sales and Spring Break timing, "A Minecraft Movie" blew past the opening weekend of Disney's "Captain America: Brave New World," which had been the top opener of 2025 with a weekend haul of $88.5 million.

Analysts attributed the conservative initial estimates to mixed reactions to trailers. However, it was clear that this video game adaptation was striking a chord with broad audiences, not just critics, according to box office analyst David A. Gross of FranchiseRe.

"When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum, and you can set aside all projections," Gross explained.

Video game movies have become increasingly popular, with success stories like Universal Pictures' "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (which opened with $146 million in April 2023) and "Five Nights at Freddy's" ($80 million) in October 2023. "A Minecraft Movie" now holds the title for the biggest domestic opening weekend for a film based on a video game.

Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, emphasized the potential for more video game adaptations to find success:

"There is a treasure trove of storytelling and (intellectual property) in that arena, making it a sweet spot where the industry can meet young moviegoers and general audiences who've become more selective."

Robbins noted that PG-rated video game adaptations had performed best in terms of box office performance, as they outgrossed PG-13 titles last year. The opening weekend for "A Minecraft Movie" provided a much-needed boost to the overall box office, which had seen a 5% decline in 2025, but improved significantly following the film's release.

Robbins pointed out that the first quarter of 2025 had been historically slow, with lacking high-grossing blockbusters. However, industry optimism is high for a strong second quarter, with major releases like Disney's "Thunderbolts" (May 2) and Warner Bros.' "F1" (June 27) set to hit theaters.

"We're finally going to see light at the end of the tunnel after a pretty dismal March," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
