Blazing Speed Displayed by Servite's "Fab Four" at State Track and Field Preliminary Rounds
CLOVIS, California - A promising start for Servite's boys' 4x100-meter relay team set the pace at the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships. The quartet of freshmen Jace Wells, Jaelen Hunter, Kamil Pelovello, and Jorden Wells clinched victory in their heat with a swift time of 40.28 seconds, securing the top qualifying time in their inaugural attempt around the oval.
With Servite previously registering a time of 40.40 seconds to win the Southern Section Masters Meet and setting a state and meet record at the Arcadia Invitational in April, Robert Gardner took over as the anchor leg for the Friars. The team demonstrated impressive potential, with their eyes set on breaking the state meet record of 40.24 set by Hawthorne in 1989.
Dubbing themselves the "Fab Four," the young runners showed a poised and confident attitude, expressing a strong desire to claim the record one day. "This is the first time all four of us have been in the same relay, but we're going after the record tomorrow," shared Jaelen Hunter.
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame secured victory in Heat 2 with a time of 40.83, maintaining the second-fastest qualifying time.
Jaelen Hunter's explosive speed showcased his status as the fastest freshman in the country, as he effortlessly won his 400-meter heat in 47.43, advancing to the finals with the third-best preliminary time. Other notable sprinters included Temecula Valley senior Jack Stadlman (46.99) and Culver City's Duaine Mayrant (47.38).
Senior sprinter RJ Sermons from Rancho Cucamonga faced fierce competition in the 200-meter race, ultimately advancing to the finals with a personal best of 21.11 seconds. The race was a closely fought contest, with USC-bound Sermons and Nic Obimgba of Torrance racing head-to-head for the last qualifying spot, eventually won by Sermons by just 20 hundredths of a second after they tied for the ninth spot to the thousandth of a second.
The day concluded with Servite clinching a memorable victory in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing their heat in 3 minutes 10.94 seconds and edging out Cathedral (3:11.13) for the second-fastest qualifying time, only behind Long Beach Poly (3:10.70).
Maintenance crews worked through the night to repair scorch marks on the track following the boys' 100-meter event. The impressive display of speed was evident across the nine sprinters who qualified for the finals, with all clocking times under 10.51 seconds. The top performer, Jaden Jefferson of De La Salle, breezed through the preliminary round with a wind-legal 10.01 time, beating the California record previously held by Rodrick Pleasant of Gardena Serra in 2022.
Christina Gray led her Carson team to the fastest qualifying time in the girls' 4x100 relay (46.16), while Journey Cole's late kick in Heat 2 gave Redondo Union (46.33) a narrow victory, ousting last year's state champion Oaks Christian (46.39). Gray soon outperformed herself, recording a personal best of 11.47 seconds in the 100 meters, finishing behind Chaparral's Keelan Wright by a slim margin.
In other notable performances, Calabasas sophomore Malia Rainey continued her impressive form, winning her heat in a personal best of 11.57 seconds. Aja Johnson, reigning discus champion from Sherman Oaks Notre Dase, struggled slightly in the preliminaries but managed to secure a place in the finals. Classmate Camarillo's Trinity Tipton topped the qualifiers in the shot put event, followed closely by Johnson. Mallelably, transgender athlete AB Hernandez from Jurupa Valley led the qualification in the girls' long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
