Blatten, Switzerland, Declared a High-Risk Red Zone After Devastating Landslide
The municipality of Blatten in Lötschental, Switzerland, has been designated as a high-risk red zone by the authorities. This classification prohibits any new construction in the area.
The decision follows a revision of the natural hazard map for the region by the Dienststelle für Naturgefahren (DNAGE), which is responsible for natural hazards in the canton of Wallis. The updated map indicates that 70 percent of the village of Blatten, which was destroyed in a landslide, cannot be rebuilt. Additionally, the hamlet of Ried within the municipality is also deemed uninhabitable and cannot be reconstructed.
The red zone classification for Blatten means that no new buildings can be constructed in the area, and efforts to rebuild the destroyed village and hamlet are prohibited. The decision aims to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further loss of life and property in the high-risk zone.
