Blackhawks' coach Blashill pushes team hard during first day of training camp

The Chicago Blackhawks have ushered in a new era with the appointment of Jeff Blashill as head coach in May. The team, set to be one of the NHL's youngest on opening night, is led by 20-year-old Connor Bedard, who turned 20 in July.

Blashill, who has a record of 204-261-72 as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, is tasked with moving along a painful rebuilding process after the Blackhawks won a total of 74 games over the previous three seasons.

On the first watch of training camp, Blashill focused on building a culture, emphasising winning fundamentals. His coaching style was evident as he hurried the players into place ahead of each drill, maintaining a high intensity and pace throughout the day.

The Blackhawks welcomed Spencer Knight to the team, acquired in a March 1 trade with Florida. Knight signed a contract extension with the Blackhawks last week, adding to the team's goaltending options alongside Arvid Soderblom. However, veteran goaltender Laurent Brossoit is sidelined by injuries, having undergone offseason hip surgery and expected to be out 'long term'.

Captain Nick Foligno expressed his positive sentiment about the first watch of training camp, while Connor Bedard and the players were aware of the demanding nature of the training camp. The intensity and pace were noticeable, with little down time.

Blashill's long-term goals include building a culture, ensuring systems are in place, and determining player positions. His experience as a coach outlet in the minors and his three years as an assistant coach to Jon Cooper with Tampa Bay may prove valuable in navigating the growing pains with the youthful Blackhawks.

General Manager of the Chicago Blackhawks, Kyle Davidson, was present at the training camp. Blashill mentioned that his feet were hurting after the first watch of practice, as he hadn't been on the ice since April. Despite this, he is ready to lead the Blackhawks through their rebuilding phase.
