The conversation escalated on stage as journalist Katie Couric, 68, quipped, "What the hell happened to your foot?" Pompeo, ever the wit, responded with a smirk, "I wish it was a cool, sexy, or exciting story - like I did some dangerous stunt or something," as reported by "People" magazine.
The Run-of-the-Mill Mishap
Unfortunately, Couric's guesses of an adrenaline-pumping tennis or pickleball match were off the mark. Instead, Pompeo's explanation was decidedly more ordinary: "I was half-asleep and got out of bed too quickly. I just landed wrong. A bit clumsy of me," she laughed.
The peculiar twist? "It's almost like my party trick," she joked. "I've done this three times now - not in exactly the same way, but this is the second time I've gotten out of bed too quickly while half-asleep and injured my foot."
The first time this occurred was during the filming of the second season of "Grey's Anatomy". "I was totally exhausted from the long shooting days. My alarm was set, even though it was Saturday, and I thought I had overslept. When the alarm went off, I jumped up in shock - and twisted my ankle wrong." Remarkably, back then she had a reasonable explanation. This time? "I have no excuse!"
