The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently engaged in the construction of the southern border wall, with approximately half a mile being built each day. The move to paint the wall black, as per President Donald Trump's request, is also part of this modernization effort.

During a news conference in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced the ongoing construction. The black paint on the wall is intended to prevent rust on the steel, and the wall's design, made of slatted steel, makes it difficult to climb or dig under.

The wall's appearance will vary based on the topography and geography of the locations where it is built. Noem mentioned that the specifics of how the wall will look in different locations will depend on these factors.

The DHS is also deploying "water-borne infrastructure" and advanced technology, such as cameras and sensors, as part of this modernization effort.

The Trump-backed "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" secured approximately $46.5 billion in funding for modernizing the border barrier system, including completing construction on 700 miles of primary wall. As part of this act, the government has completed or plans to complete 700 miles of primary wall.

The Trump administration's focus has largely shifted from the construction of the southern border wall to deportations and heightened enforcement within the US. However, the DHS is not disclosing the specific cost for painting the wall at this time.

The move to paint the wall comes as the Trump administration claims there were just over 6,000 apprehensions at the southern border in June, a 15% decrease from the previous record in March.

The black paint on the wall is expected to make it even hotter in warm temperatures, making it harder for people to climb. The US Border Patrol Chief, Michael Banks, mentioned that this will help prevent attempts to scale the wall.
