Due to Black Ice: 6 Accidents with 13 Vehicles near Memmingen - Black ice triggers six pileups on Germany’s A96 motorway near Memmingen
Multiple pileups disrupted travel on the A96 motorway near Memmingen on Christmas Eve. Black ice caused six separate accidents involving 13 vehicles in quick succession. Most occupants escaped unharmed, but one person suffered minor injuries.
The first crash occurred when a vehicle rear-ended another, forcing following traffic to brake sharply. This triggered a chain reaction, leading to five more collisions in the same area.
The A96 was shut between Memmingen-Ost and Memmingen-Nord exits for around an hour and a half. Emergency crews worked to clear the scene and reopen the road. Total damages from the accidents were estimated at approximately €150,000. Authorities have not confirmed which agency was responsible for treating the black ice on that stretch of the motorway.
The incidents caused delays but no serious harm beyond one minor injury. Traffic resumed after the cleanup, though the financial cost of the crashes remained significant. Investigations into the cause of the black ice are ongoing.
