Black Ice Triggers Massive Christmas Eve Pileup on Germany’s A96 Motorway
A serious multi-vehicle crash closed the A96 motorway near Memmingen just before Christmas, involving eight cars and leading to a full shutdown in the direction of Lindau. Authorities had already issued ice warnings for the area before the collision. The crash happened on 24 December 2025 on a stretch of the A96 between Memmingen Ost junction and Lindau, caused by black ice, which was one of six separate incidents reported that day across the region. In total, 13 vehicles were involved in crashes linked to the hazardous conditions. The German Weather Service (DWD) had placed the Allgäu region under an alert level 1 ice warning, specifically flagging the A96 section for icy conditions before the accident occurred. Emergency crews worked for around two hours to clear the wreckage and reopen the motorway, with traffic resuming at approximately 5 p.m., though delays persisted for some time. The accident highlights the risks of winter driving on untreated roads, disrupting travel plans for many just hours before Christmas. Authorities continue to urge caution during icy weather.
