Black ice triggers chaos as Allgäu battles freezing weather risks

The Allgäu region has faced dangerous icy conditions over the past few days. A severe weather warning for black ice was issued on Sunday evening, following multiple accidents earlier in the week. Despite the hazards, several ski resorts opened for the season over the weekend.

On Thursday and Friday, black ice caused numerous accidents across the region. Some drivers were still using summer tyres, leading to serious damage in several collisions. By Sunday evening, the German Weather Service (DWD) extended a severe ice warning for all districts and cities in the Allgäu, citing freezing rain as a major risk.

The severe weather warnings remain in place as freezing rain and fresh snow increase the risk of accidents. Ski resorts have begun operations, but drivers are urged to take extra caution. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as icy conditions persist.
