Black ice triggers 38 accidents and chaos on Germany’s A1 motorway

Wintery black ice caused widespread chaos on the A1 motorway near Rotenburg (Wümme) over the weekend. The hazardous conditions led to 38 weather-related accidents, with some resulting in injuries and significant property damage.

The Sittensen motorway police reported 38 accidents linked to the icy conditions. Three of these incidents left drivers with minor injuries. Two cases involved hit-and-run drivers who fled the scene without stopping.

One collision stood out after an unlicensed female driver was found carrying seven passengers in a car registered for only five. Her identity has not been released. The investigations and recovery efforts forced temporary motorway closures, causing severe traffic disruptions. Authorities estimate the total property damage from the accidents to be in the six-figure range.

The weekend’s black ice brought major disruptions to the A1 motorway. Emergency services dealt with multiple collisions, including hit-and-run incidents and an overloaded vehicle. The financial cost of the damage remains substantial, with repairs and insurance claims ongoing.
