Black ice triggers 22 crashes in Lower Saxony's winter chaos
A sudden wave of icy weather caused chaos on the roads of Lower Saxony on Monday, February 17, 2026. Within the Geestland police precinct alone, 22 accidents were reported, all linked to black ice and hazardous driving conditions. Authorities have since warned motorists to adapt their driving to the winter weather.
The accidents unfolded throughout the day as temperatures dropped overnight, leaving roads coated in black ice. Many drivers failed to maintain safe distances or reduce speed, leading to collisions. Some attempted risky overtakes, while others lost control entirely.
Most of the incidents resulted in damaged vehicles, with only a handful of people suffering minor injuries. However, across Lower Saxony's police districts, the situation was more severe. A total of 12 individuals were either seriously hurt or killed in the 22 ice-related crashes.
Police have stressed the need for caution, urging drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid sudden manoeuvres. The icy conditions are expected to persist, raising concerns about further accidents.
The spike in accidents has highlighted the dangers of winter driving when precautions are ignored. With black ice remaining a threat, authorities continue to monitor the roads closely. Drivers are being reminded to check weather updates and adjust their behaviour before setting out.
