In a significant development, the People's Party (PP) and the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) have endorsed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) aimed at drafting a new charter for Thailand. The announcement was made by the People's Party's list-MP and spokesman, Parit Wacharasindhu, on Friday.

The agreement includes a commitment to dissolve the House four months after taking office, as well as a promise to hold a first-round public referendum on the charter drafting alongside the next general election, expected to take place between March and April next year.

The charter amendment discussion is focused on paving the way for the drafting of a new constitution, with the details of the new constitution drafting assembly to be outlined in a new chapter, Chapter 15/1. The amendment's first reading is expected in early October, with the other two subsequent readings scheduled for December.

The People's Party, Pheu Thai Party, and Bhumjaithai Party are preparing to submit a draft amendment to Section 256 of the charter. The process of selecting the charter-drafting body will include both local and national representatives, reflecting the parties' commitment to inclusivity.

However, the Bhumjaithai Party's absence from the House committee meeting to discuss the charter amendment has been questioned by the People's Party. Despite its absence, BJT has reaffirmed the existing timeline for the submission of the draft amendment, which is expected next week.

Interestingly, the Bhumjaithai Party had private consultations outside the committee room on the charter amendment matter. The politician who is the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party and was voted by the People's Party to become the new Prime Minister of Thailand is Anutin Charnvirakul. He was elected on September 5, 2025.

Mr. Parit, who is also a member of the House standing committee on political development, mass communications, and public participation, further stated that the parliament is expected to be dissolved in January.

This amendment is aimed at modifying the composition and selection of members for a new constitution drafting assembly, marking a significant step towards Thailand's political future. The upcoming developments are eagerly awaited as the nation moves towards a new constitutional framework.
