BJP Prepares to File Contempt Case Against Priyanka Gandhi due to Adverse Remarks Made by Supreme Court

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its intention to file a contempt of court petition against Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. This decision was made in response to her comments defending her brother, Rahul Gandhi, after the Supreme Court criticized his remarks about the Indian Army during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022 [1][2][3].

The petition, which is yet to be formally filed, is planned to be submitted by a group of lawyers [2][3]. The BJP's move comes after Amit Malviya, a senior BJP leader, criticized the Gandhi family for their alleged contempt towards the judiciary [4][5]. Malviya stated that the Gandhis cannot be allowed to believe they are above the law [6].

The Supreme Court stayed the proceedings against Rahul Gandhi but censured him for his alleged remarks on the Indian Army [7]. In response to the court's remarks, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that it is the opposition leader's duty to ask questions and challenge the government [8].

The Congress has defended its stance, stating that it is the responsibility of political parties, especially the Leader of Opposition, to comment on issues of national interest [9]. Members of the opposition INDIA bloc have termed the top court's observations against Rahul Gandhi as unwarranted [10].

Amit Malviya has suggested that the court should take suo motu cognisance of Ms Vadra's remarks, similar to the case involving Nishikant Dubey [11]. The BJP has also taken a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, saying he hates the Indian armed forces and is being remotely controlled by foreign forces [12].

At the time of filing this report, there was no immediate reaction from Ms Vadra or the Congress. The current status of the contempt of court petition is that it is planned but not yet formally filed.
