Biswanath launches new sewer system and skill centre amid delays

Two major development projects have been launched in Biswanath, Assam. A new sewerage system and a skill development centre were both inaugurated in separate ceremonies. Local leaders and officials attended the events to mark the start of construction.

The foundation stone for the sewerage system in Biswanath Chariali was laid by MLA Promod Borthakur. The event took place in the presence of Municipal Board Chairman Amarjyoti Borthakur and other officials. Funded by the Assam government's Housing and Urban Development Department, the project will cover the area from the Gandaki river to the LIC office building at a cost of Rs 2 crore.

The system was planned under the AMRUT scheme, with its foundation stone laid in 2023. By March 2026, progress has been slow. Initial surveys and tendering were completed by mid-2024, but construction has yet to begin. Delays stem from funding shortages and difficulties in acquiring land, with no major work like pipe laying started so far.

Meanwhile, Sonitpur Lok Sabha MP Ranjit Dutta laid the foundation stone for the 'Railgate Skill Development Centre and Community Building' in Lehugaon Gaon Panchayat. The centre, estimated to cost Rs 25 lakh, aims to provide technical education to unemployed youths. A meeting chaired by senior journalist Niranjan Hazarika and attended by MLA Promod Borthakur was also held to discuss the initiative.

The sewerage project remains stalled due to ongoing challenges, while the skill centre moves forward. Once completed, the centre will offer training to help local youths gain employment. Both projects reflect efforts to improve infrastructure and livelihoods in the region.
