Bishop Vows to Address Church's Sexual Abuse Scandal

In the face of a growing crisis, Bishop Christian Stäblein of Berlin's Evangelical Church has promised a thorough investigation into cases of sexual abuse within the church. Addressing the regional synod of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO) in Berlin, he acknowledged, "We know that cases of sexualized violence and abuse by ministers are a concern for the Protestant Church. Every single instance is unbearable because there are individuals who have suffered, endured trauma, and been left with lasting pain at the hands of church employees."

The Bishop Acknowledges Responsibility

Stäblein emphasized that while there are moments when discussions of repentance may seem impossible, it is essential for the church to admit responsibility, acknowledge the suffering inflicted, and commit to addressing the issue. He highlighted actions taken by the church in response to past abuse cases, including enacting laws, establishing a recognition commission, issuing an appeal to victims, and creating a participation forum.

Upcoming Abuse Study Expected to Provide Insights

The results of a scientific study on the conditions and structures of sexualized violence within the church will be released in January. This analysis, based on a review of specific abuse cases in the 20 Protestant regional churches, will provide critical insights into the issue. Stäblein emphasized the importance of discussing this study within the EKBO and taking measures to address any identified issues.

Addressing an Unprecedented Crisis

The Bishop's promise to investigate sexual abuse within the church is a response to a growing concern within the religious community about religion-related crimes. Unfortunately, cases of sexualized violence and mistreatment by religious leaders have resulted in immense suffering, trauma, and emotional pain for countless individuals.
