BioShock's leadership has undergone a change, with the ex-Diablo head now taking the reins. There's hope that he can revitalize the struggling series for a second time.
Rod Fergusson, a veteran in the gaming industry known for his work on the Gears of War and Diablo franchises, has taken on a new challenge as the head of 2K’s Cloud Chamber studio for the BioShock franchise. Fergusson’s role will see him overseeing the development of the next BioShock game, as well as franchise extensions like the upcoming BioShock Netflix adaptation1.
Fergusson’s journey with BioShock began in 2012 when he joined Irrational Games to help with the production of BioShock Infinite. After Irrational Games became Ghost Story Games, the BioShock keys were transferred to Cloud Chamber in 2019, led initially by Kelley Gilmore2. However, Gilmore recently departed from the studio, paving the way for Fergusson to take on this crucial role3.
The upcoming BioShock game has faced challenges, with a previous report from Jason Schreier indicating trouble in its development4. These issues have led to a major restructuring at Cloud Chamber, including layoffs that affected over 80 staffers (approximately one-third of the workforce)1. The game’s expected release has been delayed past the originally anticipated late 2026 to early 2027 window1.
Fergusson’s experience as a 'game closer' and his track record with major AAA franchises position him as a leader aiming to stabilize and revitalize the long-anticipated next BioShock game25. He has described his return to BioShock as a pivotal and personal career moment, recalling his previous work shipping BioShock Infinite over 12 years ago3.
Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of 2K, sees BioShock as an important franchise due to its narrative-driven gameplay and the long gap since the last new game launched (over 12 years)6. The development of a fourth BioShock game has been in progress under Take-Two Interactive for a decade7.
Before joining Cloud Chamber, Fergusson worked across various properties, including rejoining Microsoft to work on Gears of War again. Most recently, he was the head of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard Entertainment, helping to ship Diablo 4 in 20238. However, Fergusson announced his exit from Blizzard Entertainment a few days ago9.
The news of Fergusson’s move to Cloud Chamber was first reported by Jason Schreier10. The future of the BioShock franchise is now in the capable hands of a seasoned industry veteran, as fans eagerly await the next instalment in the dystopian underwater city of Rapture.
