In the heart of Illinois, a new political race is taking shape. La Salle's own Liz Bishop, a Republican, has announced her candidacy for the 76 District State Representative seat. Bishop is running to challenge the incumbent, Amy Murri Briel, following a close contest in the 2024 election where she lost by less than 1%.

Bishop's campaign is centred around practical representation that prioritises everyday challenges over political gamesmanship in Springfield. She voices her concerns about the skyrocketing cost of living, runaway crime, and Illinois' one-party supermajority government.

The cost of living has been a significant burden for families in the district, with prices of groceries, gas, property taxes, and more on the rise. Bishop criticises Springfield for continually raising taxes and rewarding themselves with pay raises while burdening small businesses.

Public safety is another key issue for Bishop, although her policies on this point are not yet detailed. She expresses widespread frustration across La Salle, DeKalb, and Bureau counties over the Democrats' super-majority under the dome.

Bishop argues that one-party control has led to excessive tax increases, expanded government programs, and radical legislation that ignores local impacts. She calls for restoring balance and "common sense" to the state government by flipping this seat.

The 76 District State Representative seat is currently held by Democratic freshman Amy Murri Briel of Ottawa. The election for this seat will take place on March 17, 2023. Early voting will begin on February 5.

In addition to Bishop, fellow Republican Crystal Loughran has also announced her candidacy for the seat. This will mark a rematch between Bishop and Loughran, who previously contested the seat in November.

As the Illinois spring primary approaches, voters are encouraged to stay informed and make their voices heard in this crucial race. Bishop, in her own words, says, "Voters are waking up. They now know exactly who represents them in Springfield - and they're not impressed."

Liz Bishop, a Republican candidate in La Salle, emphasizes her focus on policy-and-legislation issues, particularly addressing the rising cost of living and crime, in her bid to challenge incumbent Amy Murri Briel for the 76 District State Representative seat. She critiques the current one-party supermajority government in Springfield for continually raising taxes and implementing policies with disregard for local impacts.

Bishop has expressed her concerns about the need for balance in policy-and-legislation and the restoration of "common sense" to state government by flipping the 76 District seat. She also highlights her campaign's emphasis on practical representation prioritizing everyday challenges over politics, a stance she will likely advocate for if elected.
