The tragic figures in this tale are not the survivors, but rather those who hate and cannot change. The beauty and persistence of "Pose" lies in this theme. The tragedy is felt in those unable or unwilling to change, not the resilient survivors thriving.
Revisiting "Paris Is Burning," the 1991 documentary that introduced the dancehall scene to the mainstream, provides a stark contrast. Though entertaining and insightful for some, it also resulted in exploitation, as it was white, NYU filmmaker Jennie Livingston who brought the community's story to light, without apparent connections to the ballroom community.
"Pose" takes a significantly different approach, crafted by Black and Brown queer individuals, with members of the dancehall community serving as advisors. This shift in perspective is critical, providing a more accurate and loving representation of the community.
