Bill Burr Joins Primus on Stage for Epic Performance

Comedian Bill Burr recently took a break from his stand-up career to play drums with alt-metal band Primus at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The performance, which took place on August 6, 2025, was a highlight of the band's 15-song setlist.

Burr joined Primus on drums for the song "Too Many Puppies" from their 1990 album Frizzle Fry. The band's lineup included Primus members Les Claypool (bass/vocals), Ler (guitar), and John Hoffman (drums), who had joined the band earlier that year. The performance also featured guest appearances from Tool bassist Justin Chancellor, Tool drummer Danny Carey, South Park creator Matt Stone, and musician Ty Segall.

Burr was thrilled to be part of the collaboration, describing the experience as "thrilling" despite admitting to making some mistakes during the performance. The in-ear monitors malfunctioned during the performance, causing Burr to miss some of the changes. However, he was excited to play alongside his musical heroes.

Reflecting on the performance, Burr compared his stand-up career to playing tee-ball. He advises that giving oneself permission to suck is the first step to starting a stand-up career. Burr's own career origin story involves a moment of self-empowerment, as he initiated his stand-up career with a phone call to a comedy talent contest.

Burr has a personal connection to Primus, having tried to play their songs with his brothers when they were growing up. The unique collaboration highlights Burr's drumming ability and deep appreciation for Primus and Tool's music.

The energy of the performance was described as chaotic and high-energy, with Primus "on fire" and delivering a "face-melting" set. Despite the occasional mistakes, Burr was psyched to be part of the collaboration, expressing how surreal it was to share the stage with these musicians he admired. The performance was a testament to Burr's courage and action, as he took a risk to pursue his passion for music and comedy.
