Biking event spanning over 40 kilometers within Rödinghausen municipality
In a continued effort to ensure the safety and comfort of cyclists, the Herford district conducted its sixth bicycle traffic inspection in the town of Rödinghausen on September 12, 2025. The 40-kilometer tour began at the Haus des Gastes at Pemberville Platz 1.
Uwe Nolte, from the Road Traffic Office, led the inspection. Participants included representatives from the police, the Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW, the district's Department of Traffic Routes and Green Spaces, and the municipality of Rödinghausen.
The cycle route for the inspection included directions towards Bruchmühlen, Ostkilver, Schwenningdorf, and Bieren. The experts paid close attention to various aspects, such as the visibility and stability of traffic signs, the condition of the roads and paths, height differences between the roadway and the shoulder, possible restrictions of the field of vision, and other factors. They also inspected various bollard locations during the bicycle traffic inspection.
The Herford district has seen a significant increase in the use of pedelecs, e-bikes, and cargo bikes in recent years. To cater to this growing trend, various bicycle route maps are available in the Kreis's Geoportal, including everyday cycling routes, nature trails, and day tours. Citizens can access or calculate these bicycle routes in the Geoportal.
The intermunicipal cycle path network in the Herford district has been retained and expanded, providing comfort and safety for cyclists. Safety measures such as the elimination of accident black spots, the installation of digital dialogue displays (speed displays), and the newly established bicycle traffic inspections were decisive criteria for the district's admission to AGFS NRW.
The Herford district is bicycle-friendly, having been admitted to the "Working Group of pedestrian- and cycle-friendly cities, municipalities, and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia e. V." (AGFS NRW). The district's commitment to maintaining and improving cycling conditions is evident in the regular traffic inspections carried out at regular intervals.
Uwe Nolte emphasizes the importance of keeping an eye on the cycle paths due to the changing nature of bicycle traffic. The district continues to take steps to improve the safety and infrastructure for cyclists, including the installation of digital dialogue displays and the elimination of accident black spots. The newly established bicycle traffic inspections are a testament to the district's dedication to ensuring a safe and enjoyable cycling experience for all.
In addition, the district sports association and the police, in cooperation with the district, offer popular cycling safety training for pedelec and e-bike users. Various bicycle route maps are available in the Kreis's Geoportal, making it easier for cyclists to plan their journeys. Whether you're a daily commuter or a weekend explorer, the Herford district is committed to providing a bike-friendly environment for all.
