Biker meets fatal end in collision on Mountain View roads

In Mountain View, Hawaii, a tragic motorcycle accident claimed the life of 34-year-old Hapaki Teixeira on Monday night. The collision occurred at the intersection of Puhala and Hibiscus streets.

According to the Hawaii Island police, Teixeira was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, a requirement in Mountain View that mandates motorcycle riders to wear helmets with eye protection, except when riding motorcycles equipped with windscreens. The motorcycle involved, a 2007 Suzuki Boulevard, had its headlights on, as required by law, but lane splitting, which is prohibited statewide, may have played a role in the incident.

The police suspect speed as a factor in the crash, although a thorough investigation is ongoing, including an autopsy and a coroner's inquest. Witnesses are encouraged to contact Officer Jerome Duarte at (808) 961-2339 or [email protected]. Anonymous witnesses may also call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to traffic safety measures. Last year, at the same time, there were 21 official traffic fatalities, and as of the current incident, there have been 15 in 2025. The Hawaii Island police enforce traffic safety laws and conduct investigations into such collisions, particularly emphasizing enforcement against speeding and impaired driving.

Mountain View and Hawaii as a whole are committed to motorcycle safety. Motorcyclists are required to wear helmets with eye protection, have their headlights on at all times, and are prohibited from lane splitting. The police take these laws seriously and investigate accidents thoroughly.

Teixeira was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center but was later pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m. on Monday. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
