Bike racing should cease its constant tinkering and instead concentrate on proven strategies and techniques.
New and Improved: Let's Save Cycling in the USA - A Fresh Perspective
Gear up, folks! The cycling world is abuzz with a fresh new concept bound to take the USA by storm - Formula Fixed! This innovative bike racing format promises high-octane, adrenaline-pumping action on tight, twisted, indoor tracks, designed for both a spectator-filled arena and an online audience. It's the kind of thing that has us here at CycleNews rubbing our hands with excitement!
But Formula Fixed isn't the first attempt to shake up cycling in the States. There've been prior experiments like the National Cycling League (NCL), with city-based franchise teams, big-ticket celebrity investments, and a hefty prize fund. Yet, like many before it, this could be a flash in the pan.
I'll admit, I'm not one for constant reinvention in sports. I've got a deep love for Test cricket, can put up with Twenty20, but The Hundred? A bit too much for me. There's a reason traditional practices are cherished - the Tour de France is timeless, and for good reason!
However, Formula Fixed has the potential to catapult road racing in the USA towards better days. But we mustn't forget, the Lance Armstrong legacy is still casting a long shadow over the sport. With efforts being made to uncover the truth and move forward, hopefully, there can be a path to a thriving two-wheeled racing scene in the US.
America isn't the only nation wrestling with ways to reinvigorate road racing. The UK is fighting the same battle, as are numerous European countries. Innovations like Rapha's Super-League are shining examples to consider, offering a new points competition for British domestic racing, aiming to tie together existing events in a simplified, exciting manner.
In road racing, it's easy to feel that everything is somehow broken and needs tearing down, but let's not forget what's great about our sport. This season sees the return of the Classics and the thrill of the Grand Tours. Road racing doesn't need novelty - what it needs is more simplicity and a clearer, more engaging format.
