Bihar's Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, declared that residents of poll-bound Bihar will receive free electricity up to 125 units.
In a significant development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on July 17, 2025, that all domestic consumers in the state will receive free electricity for up to 125 units per month, effective from August 1, 2025 (applicable from the July billing cycle). This scheme is expected to benefit approximately 1.67 crore households across Bihar.
Under the Kutir Jyoti Scheme, the state government will also initiate the installation of solar power plants on rooftops or at nearby public spaces within the next three years. Extremely poor families will have solar power systems installed at the full cost borne by the government, while others will receive government support. The aim is to generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy in Bihar over the coming years.
This move contrasts with earlier promises made by Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, who had pledged free electricity as part of his party's election manifesto during previous elections. However, the specifics of Tejashwi's promise, such as the quantum and timelines of free electricity supply, were less defined.
Meanwhile, the state government has also increased the pension under the Social Security Scheme for the old age, differently-abled, and widows in the state to ₹1100 per month.
In other news, Tejashwi Yadav has urged the Prime Minister to review reservation in the private sector and judiciary. RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav also stated that if there is an opposition leader like Tejashwi Yadav, the government will have to bow down.
Nitish Kumar has also promised to deliver jobs and employment opportunities to one crore youth in the next five years (2025-2030), and more than one lakh teachers are to be recruited under the Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE).
However, no new facts regarding the promise to deliver jobs and employment opportunities, solar power plants, or the recruitment of teachers were mentioned in the current paragraph.
In November 2024, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Leader Tejashwi Yadav had promised to give 200 units of free electricity to consumers if voted in power in the 2025 assembly election.

- The free electricity announcement by Bihar's Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, for domestic consumers, underlines a notable shift in the state's energy policy-and-legislation, differing from past promises made by rival politician Tejashwi Yadav.
- The implementation of the Kutir Jyoti Scheme, which involves the installation of solar power plants, demonstrates the Bihar government's commitment to promoting green energy, thereby aligning with broader global trends in both sports (promotion of eco-friendly events) and health (reduced air pollution).
- Aside from the free electricity announcement, Nitish Kumar's other plans to deliver jobs and employment opportunities, as well as the recruitment of teachers, remain topics of discussion in the realm of politics and general-news, awaiting further details for evaluation.
