Bihar Congress Needs a Dose of Realism, Edits Suggest

The political landscape in Bihar is undergoing a significant shift, with the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) gearing up for the upcoming Assembly elections. The alliance, comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Indian National Congress (INC), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), is aiming to challenge the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state.

However, the road to victory is fraught with challenges. The Congress party, a key member of the Mahagathbandhan, has been losing its prominence in many states, and its poor performance in the last Assembly elections contributed significantly to the alliance's loss. The Congress party's ambitious goal of contesting in 70 seats in the upcoming election, given its disastrous showing in the last elections, is seen as unrealistic by many.

The Congress party's decision to contest in a larger number of seats is a departure from its previous performance and has raised questions about its strategy. Some argue that the party is living in its own dream world, building its own castles in the air based on a single event, and ignoring the ground realities. The party's increased enthusiasm, following Rahul Gandhi's Voter Adhikar Yatra in Nepal, which criticized the NDA for alleged vote theft, has not been enough to overshadow these concerns.

Meanwhile, regional forces are calling the shots in many states, and the Mahagathbandhan needs to work as a single unit to stand a chance against them. The alliance partners need to foster a synergy to upset the BJP-led NDA's election machinery. Tejashwi Yadav, the RJD leader, has stated his intention to be the candidate in all 243 seats in the upcoming Bihar Assembly election. However, the option for him to be the candidate in all seats is not open for the Congress, his alliance partner.

The Mahagathbandhan's success in Bihar hangs in the balance. The Congress party needs to wake up to the ground realities and work towards building a strong alliance, rather than trying to dictate terms to imaginary slaves. Stable partnerships among trustworthy allies are the new rule of the electoral game, and the Congress party would do well to remember this. The Mahagathbandhan is at striking distance of a win in Bihar, but only if the parties can put aside their differences and work together.
