Hamburg Cyclassics 2022: Rory Townsend Defies Odds to Secure Surprising Victory
In a thrilling turn of events, Rory Townsend emerged victorious in the 28th edition of the Hamburg Cyclassics, held in the vibrant city of Hamburg, Germany. The race, which saw numerous streets closed for the event, attracted a professional field of cyclists, as well as approximately 10,000 amateur cyclists who participated on two different courses.
The professional race, the longest in the past five years of the North German one-day race with a distance of 207 kilometers, was a battle between sprinters and strong classics riders. Among the top contenders were Wout van Aert, Jasper Philipsen, and Jonathan Milan, all known for their impressive performances in similar races.
Van Aert, who secured a prestigious stage win on the Champs-Élysées during the Tour de France, and Philipsen, a top sprinter riding for Alpecin-Deceuninck, were expected to give a fierce competition. However, it was Townsend who outperformed them all, securing a surprising win.
The win came as part of a breakaway group that formed shortly after the start in Buxtehude, Lower Saxony. Meanwhile, Philipsen, who had to withdraw from the Tour de France due to a heavy crash, managed to finish fourth in the race, demonstrating his resilience and determination.
Wout van Aert, who finished second in this race in 2022, expressed his admiration for Townsend's performance, acknowledging that the course suited him well. Jonathan Milan, who also finished second in the ADAC Cyclassics previously and has recently won Tour de France stage wins, rounded out the top three, with Arnaud De Lie and Paul Magnier finishing second and third, respectively.
Unfortunately, no German rider made it into the top ten in the race. Phil Bauhaus, a sprinter, had a close call about 50 kilometers from the finish when he crashed but was able to continue. The organizers reported "usual" incidents during the amateur races, with 21 ambulance call-outs.
Throughout the race, the professional cyclists passed several iconic locations in Hamburg multiple times, including the Köhlbrand Bridge, the Elbe beach, the Jungfernstieg, the Reeperbahn, and the Waseberg in the west of the city. The last German victory at the Cyclassics was achieved by André Greipel ten years ago.
In the Frankfurt-Eschborn race, Wout van Aert and Jasper Philipsen were expected to be the main contenders, given their strong sprinting and classics capabilities. With their impressive performances in the Hamburg Cyclassics, both riders have solidified their positions as key contenders for future races.
