Biathlon team officially receives Olympic gold medal from Sochi.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made the decision to reallocate the gold medal in the 2014 Winter Olympics men's 4x7.5 km relay, originally awarded to the disqualified Russian team due to state-sponsored doping. The gold medal has been retroactively awarded to the German team: Erik Lesser, Daniel Böhm, Arnd Peiffer, and Simon Schempp.
This decision comes more than eleven and a half years after the race in Sochi. The Russian team's disqualification led to the annulment of their results, promoting Germany to the gold medal position. In the final race on February 22, 2014, Simon Schempp, the anchor for the German team, finished 3.5 seconds behind Anton Shipulin, the Russian winner.
Anomalies were found in the biological passport of Eugene Ustyugov, a member of the Russian team. All of Ustyugov's results between January 24, 2010, and the end of the 2013/2014 season were nullified following this decision. The Swiss Federal Tribunal rejected two appeals by Ustyugov against decisions by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding his doping ban and the nullification of his results.
As a result, Austria was awarded the silver medal, and Norway received the bronze. The IOC will offer the option for medal ceremonies at the Winter Olympics next year in Italy in consultation with the local organizers and the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Arnd Peiffer, a member of the German team, has expressed his preference to receive his medal at the Winter Olympics next year in Italy, preferably at the biathlon stadium in Antholz.
Erik Lesser, the team's lead athlete, expressed his relief about the decision, stating, "I'm glad that this is finally over and done with. I'm looking forward to a new medal in a new color." The IBU believes that the Russians manipulated data in the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The IOC's decision to reallocate the medals was considered a formality following Ustyugov's last legal recourse.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation had already received the silver medals returned by Lesser and his teammates some months ago. The new medal will be in a different color due to the change in the medal positions. A specific ceremony for handing over the Olympic medals to Peiffer and other affected biathletes at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy has not been detailed in the available search results.
