Biathlon team clinches Olympic gold in Sochi officially awarded.
In a landmark decision, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has retroactively awarded the gold medal in the 4x7.5km relay at the 2014 Winter Olympics to a German team, following the disqualification of the original Russian team due to state-sponsored doping.
The Russian athlete, Eugene Ustyugov, a member of the disqualified team, has been convicted of doping and subsequently disqualified. This decision has resulted in the loss of all the medals won by Ustyugov during that period, including the gold in the 2014 relay, as well as gold in the mass start and bronze in the relay at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and two silver medals at the 2011 World Championships.
The IOC made this decision following a meeting of its executive board on Friday, citing anomalies found in Ustyugov's biological passport and manipulation of data in the Moscow anti-doping laboratory during the 2014 Winter Olympics. The IBU has assumed that the Russians were involved in such manipulations.
Norway has been awarded the bronze medal in the 2014 relay, while Austria has been awarded the silver. The German team, consisting of Erik Lesser, Daniel Böhm, Arnd Peiffer, and Simon Schempp, will now be the proud owners of the gold.
Speaking about the decision, Simon Schempp, the anchor leg runner who lost to Anton Shipulin by 3.5 seconds in the final of the 2014 relay, expressed relief and looked forward to receiving a new medal in a new color. Arnd Peiffer also expressed interest in receiving his medal at the Winter Olympics next year in Italy, preferably at the biathlon stadium in Antholz.
The IOC has offered the option to present the newly won Olympic medals at the Winter Olympics next year in Italy, in coordination with local organizers and the International Biathlon Union (IBU). This decision ends years of waiting for the German team, as they have been promoted to the gold medal position.
However, the search results do not provide information about an event in Italy for the awarding of the newly won Olympic medal to Arnd Peiffer and the other members of the German Olympic biathlon relay team. It remains to be seen how and when the medals will be officially presented.
