In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Laura Dahlmeier, the two-time German Olympic biathlon champion, has lost her life in a mountaineering accident on Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range.
The incident occurred on July 28, 2025, during a mountaineering expedition. According to reports, Dahlmeier was struck by falling rocks at an altitude of about 18,700 feet (6,069 meters). Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, survived and managed to descend to base camp with help, issuing a distress call that triggered a rescue mission.
However, due to bad weather conditions, rescue helicopters could not reach the site, and the operation was called off on the evening of July 29. Authorities believe Dahlmeier died instantly from the injuries sustained in the rockfall. A helicopter has flown over the inaccessible site where Dahlmeier is located, but no signs of life were detected.
Laura Dahlmeier was a celebrated athlete, having won two Olympic gold medals at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games and the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup before retiring from sport in 2019 at age 25. After retiring from biathlon, she dedicated herself to mountaineering.
The management of Dahlmeier confirmed the incident, and the news has sent shockwaves through the sports world. The specific mountain where the incident occurred is the Laila Peak, a challenging and remote location in the Karakorum range.
Rescue teams have not yet been able to reach the site due to ongoing rockfall danger in the area. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Laura Dahlmeier's family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.

The Commission's proposals for health and safety regulations in extreme sports like mountaineering might be reconsidered in light of Laura Dahlmeier's tragic death. The European Parliament and the Council could be urged to take swift action to ensure the implementation of these proposals, as the loss of talented athletes like Dahlmeier highlights the need for improved safety measures in extreme sports.
