France's Martin Fourcade to Receive Stolen Gold Medal at 2026 Winter Olympics

Martin Fourcade, France's most decorated Olympian, will finally receive the gold medal he was denied in the mass start event at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Fourcade will be awarded his rightful medal during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina at a special recognition ceremony.

The decision was made by the IOC executive committee in a meeting in Milan, following the rejection of Alexander Ustyugov's final appeal against his disqualification for doping in May 2021. Ustyugov, a Russian biathlete, was stripped of all his results between 2010 and 2014, including the mass start in Vancouver.

Fourcade became prominent at the age of 22 during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where he won the mass start event. This significant race marked the beginning of a remarkable career for the French biathlete. Over the course of his 11-year career, Fourcade won the overall World Cup a record seven times and collected a total of 28 world championship medals, including 13 golds.

Among his Olympic triumphs, Fourcade has five additional gold medals: individual and pursuit in 2014, pursuit, mass start, and mixed relay in 2018, and silver in the mass start at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Fourcade's impressive achievements led to his induction into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a member in 2022.

The IOC president Kirsty Coventry confirmed that Fourcade will receive his gold medal during the 2026 Winter Olympics. This long-awaited recognition will undoubtedly be a highlight of the event for Fourcade and a testament to his unyielding spirit and dedication to his sport.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will take place in Milan-Cortina, marking a fitting occasion for Fourcade to receive his rightful gold medal from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics mass start race. The ceremony will serve as a reminder of Fourcade's remarkable career and his significant contributions to the world of biathlon.
