Bhopal's Rs 1,700-crore government complex to rise after devastating 2023 fire
A major fire in June 2023 destroyed Satpura Bhawan in Bhopal, prompting plans for a new government complex. The project will replace both Satpura and Vindhyanchal Bhawans with a modern, larger facility. Officials estimate the construction cost at around Rs 1,700 crore. The fire, caused by a short circuit, led authorities to rethink office space for government departments. The proposed building will offer nearly double the current area, consolidating multiple offices under one roof. A parallel road and internal walkways are also planned to reduce traffic congestion in the area.
The Madhya Pradesh Housing Board has suggested a revenue model to fund the project. Part of the new complex could be rented to private banks and corporate tenants for a set period. However, as of April 2026, no formal discussions or agreements with potential tenants have been made public. The design follows a Green Building concept, maximising natural light to cut energy use. Another proposal aims to halt new land allocations for government offices, encouraging departments to move into the upcoming complex instead.
The project seeks to modernise ageing infrastructure while generating revenue through leasing. If completed, it will centralise government operations and improve traffic flow in Bhopal. Construction details and tenant agreements remain under discussion.
