Bhanga's Nightlong Hilsa Fair Offers Affordable Prices Ahead of Fishing Ban
A nightlong Hilsa Fair in Bhanga, Faridpur, saw affordable prices for the fish despite a limited supply. The fair, held from Friday night to Saturday morning, was organized by the Faridpur District Administration ahead of the government's annual hilsa conservation ban.
The fair offered hilsa at Tk 100-200 lower per kg than regular market rates. A 1kg-sized hilsa was priced between Tk 2,000 and Tk 2,200, while smaller sizes were also available. A 500-gram hilsa fetched Tk 800-1,000 per kg, and a 250-gram hilsa sold for Tk 550-600 per kg.
Despite the limited supply due to the upcoming fishing ban, hilsa prices remained affordable during the fair. Around 100 tonnes of hilsa were sold during the event. The hilsa fishing ban will remain in force until October 26 to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season.
The annual Hilsa Fair under the Hashamdia Flyover in Bhanga, Faridpur, provided an opportunity for locals to purchase hilsa at reasonable prices before the fishing ban. The fair also raised awareness about the importance of hilsa conservation during the breeding season.
