Sverdlovsk Oblast, aka Beer-ville Russia! They guzzled down a whopping 349 million liters of the frothy stuff last year, that's a staggering 71.3 liters per person! That's according to the latest Roспотребнадзор report, which shows the Russian average is a mere 49.72 liters per capita[1].

Despite the massive consumption, Sverdlovsk Oblast doesn't even crack the top 5 beer-loving regions, coming in at a respectable 8th place. The top spots went to:

  1. Republic of Khakassia - 84.61 liters per person.
  2. Nenets Autonomous Okrug - 82.21.
  3. Republic of Komi - 75.83.
  4. Murmansk Oblast - 74.96.
  5. Sakhalin Oblast - 74.87.

In 2021, residents of Sverdlovsk Oblast downed more beer – 349 million liters, or 71.34 liters per person.

Sverdlovsk Oblast's outstanding beer sales have led some to suggest the introduction of a "dry law" in the region. For instance, in Vologda Oblast, you can only buy alcohol during certain windows during the weekdays[2]. After the law was introduced, mortality rates in the region dropped significantly.
