The Chicago Cubs concluded a disappointing six-game road trip with a 7-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, finishing the journey at 2-4. The team's struggles come as they find themselves in a wait-and-see mode ahead of the Trade Deadline, according to General Manager Jed Hoyer.

Meanwhile, the National League leader, the Philadelphia Phillies, have been navigating their own challenges. Star players Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper are currently on the injured list, missing a weekend series against the Miami Marlins. Despite this, the Phillies' Nos. 2-5 hitters - Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh, and Nick Castellanos - each delivered multiple hits and drove in all seven of the club's runs in a recent game.

Turner, in particular, shone on his 31st birthday, delivering a clutch go-ahead two-run single. The All-Star shortstop's performance helped the Phillies secure a win and extend their lead in the NL East to 55-29.

Injuries have also impacted the Cubs' rotation, with key reliever Keegan Thompson placed on the 15-day IL due to a forearm strain. Hayden Wesneski (2-4, 3.60 ERA) will remain in the rotation following the injury to Javier Assad. Wesneski, who got a spot start last Wednesday in San Francisco, is expected to stay in the rotation for the near future.

The Cubs have found success on the bases, however. The team stole 36 bases in June, the most in a month since they stole 37 bases in August 1990. Chicago also led the majors in stolen base percentage in June (90.0%) and ranks fifth this season (82.8%). Four Cubs players rank in the top ten in stolen bases in the National League.

Pete Crow-Armstrong, in particular, has been impressive, ranking second in stolen bases in the majors since June 1 (10).

The Phillies are set to welcome a new face to their rotation as well. Righty Michael Mercado, who has posted a 1.71 ERA and 44:23 K:BB in 47.1 innings at Triple-A this season, will make his first big-league start for the Phillies on Tuesday, taking the place of the injured Spencer Turnbull. If Aaron Nola is scheduled to rest, Tyler Phillips will replace Mercado in his first MLB start of the season.

Manager Rob Thomson remains optimistic that both Schwarber and Harper could return before the All-Star break. Nico Hoerner of the Cubs provided a spark for the team with a solo home run in the first inning of the game against the Brewers.

As both teams navigate injuries and look to the future, the race in the National League continues to heat up.
