Hittin' the Track with Mike Somich for Preakness Day!

It's Preakness day at Pimlico Race Course, and the second Jewel of the Triple Crown is up for grabs! But the Preakness isn't the only exciting race on the card today. Let's jump right in!

The Preakness, Pimlico, Race #13

The Preakness is shaping up to be a scorcher with speedsters #1 Goal Oriented and #8 Clever Again taking the reins. This pace sets the stage for the 8-5 morning line favorite, #2 Journalism. While concerns linger about the quick turnaround from the Derby, remember that Journalism ran three races in seven weeks as a two-year-old and improved with each outing. Trainer Michael McCarthy could have waited for the Belmont; instead, he opted for this race, believing Journalism is the best horse in the field. If you spot +140 or better in a fixed-odds market, it's a solid bet.

Top 4 Predictions: 2-6-4-8

The Bets: $5 Superfecta 2 / 4,6,8 / 4,6,8 / 4,6,8 - $25 Exacta 2/6 - $10 Trifecta 2/6/4,8

Turf Sprint Stakes, Pimlico, Race #9

While not a main event, race #9 has an intriguing contender. #4 Witty, a 10-1 longshot on the morning line, is an appealing addition to this puzzle. Despite his recent results, which don't match this group, three of his races were on the dirt, two involved gate issues, and one was off a lengthy layoff. Now, Flavien Prat, a top jockey, is in the saddle for a horse who thrives at Pimlico, with one win and one second in two starts here. He finished second in this race last year and has run four races that indicate he can compete at shorter odds against this group. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 8-1 or better.

Top 4 Predictions: 4-2-5-8

The Bet: $50 Win #4

Bonus Bets:

  • Pimlico, Race #11 - $50 Win #5 (If we're on the turf)
  • Pimlico, Race #12 - $50 Win #3 (If we're on the turf)

In the Preakness race at Pimlico Race Course, the odds favor Journalism (#2) with a solid bet potential at +140, given his impressive performances and trainer's confidence, despite the quick turnaround from the Derby. Meanwhile, in the Turf Sprint Stakes race at Pimlico, Witty (#4) has potential, especially with top jockey Flavien Prat on board and a history of excelling at Pimlico, despite being a 10-1 longshot on the morning line.
