Beto Yarce takes charge as Seattle's new Economic Development Director

Beto Yarce has been named Seattle’s new Economic Development Director. He arrives with plans to simplify city rules and support local businesses. His focus includes working with major firms like Starbucks and Amazon to protect jobs. Yarce moved to the U.S. from Mexico as an undocumented immigrant in 2003. Before this role, he worked as a regional Small Business administrator under the Biden Administration. His experience includes helping small enterprises navigate government policies.

Seattle’s downtown currently faces a 22% retail vacancy rate, partly due to lower foot traffic. Yarce aims to tackle this by reviewing and easing city regulations. Last year, officials adjusted rules to spare smaller shops from costly building upgrades. Now, he is examining further changes to remove barriers for new businesses.

In early June, Yarce will meet with Starbucks executives for a roundtable discussion. While he has not outlined specific policy shifts, his goal is clear: make it simpler for companies to open and grow in the city. Yarce’s approach combines regulatory review with partnerships with large employers. His efforts target both small businesses and major corporations to boost Seattle’s economy. The outcome could influence retail occupancy and job retention in the coming months.
